Symposium on Eugenics

FAU's Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education will host the academic symposium "Eugenics: Race, Public Health and the Science of Nationalism" on Monday, Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Majestic Palm Room, FAU's Student Union, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The symposium is in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race" on display in the Schmidt Galleries through Friday, Feb. 14. Faculty and student scholars will present papers on a variety of themes related to the legacies of eugenics.

In addition to the various panels of papers, FAU will host two keynote addresses from experts on eugenics within two different disciplines. At 9 a.m., Fabiola López-Durán, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history at Rice University, will present

"Eugenics in the Tropics: Architecture and Race in Modern Brazil." Alan Berger, Ph.D., Raddock Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Holocaust Studies and director of the Center for the Study of Values and Violence after Auschwitz at FAU, will present "Eugenics and the Holocaust: Rehearsal for Destruction" at 2 p.m.
