The Department of Music in Florida Atlantic University's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present the internationally acclaimed concert pianist and New York Piano Festival director Alexander Beridze on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by visiting www.fauevents.com, by calling 1-800-564-9539, or at the Box Office in the Student Union on FAU's Boca Raton campus.
The concert will feature Beethoven's "Sonata No. 28 Op. 101 in A Major"; Brahms' "Two Rhapsodies Op. 79;" Tchaikovsky's "June and August from 'Seasons' Op. 37 b;" Rachmaninoff's "Two Preludes from Op. 23;" Scriabin's "Two Etudes No. 9 and No. 12 from Op. 8;" and Stravinsky's "Three movements from the Ballet 'Petrushka.'"
Beridze was born in Tbilisi, in what is now the Republic of Georgia. He won the gold medal at the 53rd World Piano Competition in 2009 at the age of 29 and he made his New York recital debut in April 2011 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. He then performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in November 2014.
Of one of his recent performances, the New York Concert Review wrote, "'Petrushka,' a monstrous beast to most pianists, seemed simply a play toy to him, albeit a musical and imaginative play toy. One senses the pianist having fun with it, delighting in the ballet's characters and celebrating what was a brilliant finale to a superb recital."
