faculty photoIt is no surprise that Byron R. McCane chose an academic career. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he is the son of "greatest generation" parents, both of whom were the first in their families to graduate from college.  On vacations in an old Dodge station wagon, the family would stop and visit whenever the road signs indicated there was a college in an upcoming town.

He sat the bench for his high school basketball team, where one of his teammates was Jeffrey Immelt, the current CEO of General Electric. Somehow Byron and Jeff have lost touch with each other since then.

After studying at the University of Illinois and Duke University, he taught at Duke, W&L, Converse College and Wofford College before coming to FAU.

His early research and publications focused upon the archaeology of death ritual in the Roman Empire, while more recent publications have explored the similarities between the ancient Empire and 21st-century globaliztion.  He has excavated in Israel, Jordan, and Rome, and currently he co-directs the Kinneret Regional Project, an international excavation of an ancient village on a hilltop above the Sea of Galilee.

Although it has now been 26 years, Byron continues to believe that the Cincinnati Reds will win the World Series again someday.
