English as a Second Language Studies Certificate

The Certificate in English as a Second Language (ESL) Studies is open to all undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students at FAU. The ESL Studies Certificate aims to prepare those who wish to teach ESL in a variety of settings, either overseas or in the US.

ESL certificate courses taken to fulfill other degree requirements at FAU may be applied towards the certificate.

Required Courses (15 credits):

ESL Certificate (undergraduate) required courses: ESL Certificate (graduate) required courses:
1. LIN3010 Introduction to Linguistics 1. LIN6135 Principles of Linguistic Analysis
2. TSL4251 Applied Linguistics and TESOL

Plus any three of the following:

LIN4930 Introduction to SLA

LIN4600 Sociolinguistics

LIN4620 Bilingualism

TSL4080 Intro to Theories and Practices of TESOL

LIN4680 Structure of Modern English

All courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better and with an overall average of "B."

Plus any three of the following:

FLE6892 Research in Foreign Language Learning Theories

LIN6601 Sociolinguistics

LIN6622 Bilingualism

LIN6720 Second Language Acquisition

SPC6715 Intercultural Communication

LIN4680 Structure of Modern English

All courses must be completed with a grade of "B" or better.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

I am a K-12 teacher and need the ESOL Endorsement from the Florida Department of Education. Is this the right program for me?

No. For the ESOL Endorsement, you have to contact the Department of Curriculum, Culture, and Educational Inquiry in the College of Education at www.coe.fau.edu/academicdepartments/ccei/

I am interested in interacting with students from different cultures and possibly travel abroad to teach English. Is this the right program for me?

Yes. In the course of this certificate program, you will learn about the English language, learn about curriculum development and teaching issues related to teaching English as a Second Language.

I am an undergrad at FAU. How do I enroll in the ESL Studies Certificate?

There is no application or enrollment procedure. After you complete the required courses, you add the certificate on your application for graduation. For advising, contact Anna Anoufrieva, the LLCL undergraduate advisor, at aanoufri@fau.edu.

I am a graduate student at FAU. How do I enroll in the ESL Studies Certificate?

There is no application or enrollment procedure. After you complete the required courses, you add the certificate on your application for graduation and fill out the completion form.

I am not an FAU student, but I would like to complete the ESL Studies Certificate. How do I enroll?

Call the registrar’s office at 561 297 3041 or visit http://www.fau.edu/graduate/applyonline/non-degree-seeking.php to find out what steps to take to become a non-degree student at FAU. After you complete the required courses, you fill out the completion form and return it to the ESL Program Director.

After I have taken the required courses, where can I find a copy of the completion form?

If I complete the courses for the ESL Studies Certificate, can I later use these courses towards a degree?

Yes, but there is a limit of 6 credits that can be credited towards a degree. So only 2 of the 5 courses can be counted if you decide to become a degree-seeking student at FAU after completing the ESL Studies Certificate.

How do I receive the certificate when I am done?

After you complete the required courses, you fill out the completion form. [add link to completion form] and send a hard copy of the completed form to:
