PhD Student Jason O'Connor to Provide Keynote at Nova Southeastern University's Exhibit, "Holocaust by Bullets"
PhD Student Natale Filice to Publish Translation of Theatrical Works by Vincenzo Ziccarelli
Natale Filice, a second-year student in the PhD in Comparative Studies program, has recently completed revisions on his newest publication. Filice translated a collection of theatrical works by Italian playwright, Vincenzo Ziccarelli. Ziccarelli's work has thus far gone unpublished, so Filice's translation and introduction to the text will open up new doors for scholarship on Italian theater. Noted Italian publishers, Donzelli Editore, supported the project.
Alum Publishes Book on Early Modern Spanish Theater
Elizabeth M. Cruz Petersen, PhD alumna, playwright and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture at FAU, recently published her first book, Women's Somatic Training in Early Modern Spanish Theater . In her text, she explores the somatic techniques of early modern Spanish actresses as they prepared for a role. Peterson’s text provides the first detailed look at 17th-century Spanish actresses, and contributes greatly to the fields of comedia studies and somaesthetics.
Alum's Work Selected for Cambridge Scholars Human Rights Campaign
PhD alumna Nancy Stein’s book Images and Human Rights has been selected by Cambridge Scholars Publishing for their December Human Rights Campaign. This international campaign celebrates texts promoting human rights in observance of annual Human Rights day on December 10th. Stein’s text discusses the ethical implications of image disbursal and how these images interact with human rights. The text integrates the research and work of healthcare advocates, human rights scholars and activists, photographers, and visual anthropologists. Included in the collection is a chapter by alumna Kitty Wahlberg, entitled “Sex Trafficking: The Visual construction of Suffering.”
Alum Appointed as Full-Time Assistant Professor
Dr. Shereen Siddiqui, a 2015 graduate of the program, has recently accepted a full-time Assistant Professorship position at Santiago Canyon College in the Women's Studies department. Dr. Siddiqui has taught courses in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies; Sociology; and Freshman Programs at FAU since 2001. Drawing from her teaching experiences and feminist theories, her doctoral dissertation, Teaching to Transform: Toward an Action-oriented Feminist Pedagogy in Women’s Studies, focuses on how to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the college classroom through experiential learning and engaged teaching.
Alum Appointed to Assistant Dean of Students at Clark University
Dr. Nadja Johnson, a 2012 graduate of the program, was recently appointed as Assistant Dean of Students at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Prior to joining Clark, she was Director of Diversity and Student Success at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. Read Clark's announcement here.
