I have taught ENC 1101, ENC 1102, and ENC 1130 as a GTA for the last three years, using the standard sequences, as well having written my own sequences and prompts. Therefore, I am especially familiar with the text required for these courses, Emerging: A Reader. I am able to help freshmen students with their essay assignments for these courses at all phases of the writing process: brainstorming, webbing, outlining, drafting, and revising. I have been a graduate student in English at FAU for the last three years as well, and thus I am well acquainted with the various types of writing that one encounters in graduate school: grant proposals, annotated bibliographies, literature reviews, reports, conference papers, seminar papers, abstracts, thesis proposals, and the process of writing a thesis itself. My literary interests are broad and include everything from British Romanticism, to my area of concentration, high Modernism and Postmodernism. I am also very interested in literary theory, including Marxism, neo-Marxism, reader response theory, post-structuralism, post colonialism, psychoanalytic theories, feminist theory, queer theory, disability studies, and film studies.

Sometimes the most difficult part of the writing process is getting started. I am able to help students with building basic skills as writers, understanding confusing writing assignments, brainstorming useful ideas, and formulating thesis statements that aid in providing cohesion and focus to their entire papers.

Betty

I enjoy close reading. A thorough understanding of the text is imperative to the writing process. It is also important to organize ideas in a meaningful way when composing a paper; for example, effective openings and closings act as bookends to introduce and summarize main ideas in an essay.

My degrees are in philosophy, mathematics and English.  I'm especially able to help with the logical organization of essays in all disciplines and with philosophy papers in particular, which need special clarity of expression. Feel free to book an appointment with me no matter where you are in the writing process.  I've found that it's often very useful to talk through an essay prompt as you're getting started with writing, so that you can be sure your ideas are clear.

I can help elucidate seemingly abstruse poetry, and offer close-reading strategies so as to examine the language of the poem. I also have a talent for finding patterns in literature and can offer guidance in this highly creative realm.

Janelle

Jeremy

My background is in Film and Media Studies, and I have a soft spot for large dry erase boards like the ones in the Writing Center.  Big ideas deserve big spaces, and I see visualizing a project in its entirety as an essential part of realizing one's creativity.  I am particularly fond of that point in the writing process when one moves from brainstorming ideas into the formulation and structure of an argument.  In other words, I can help you move ideas out of your head and onto the paper.

Kristina

If you're feeling overwhelmed by an assignment--no matter where you are in the writing process--I can help. I am happy to help you find a thesis statement that fits your goal and to help you organize your thoughts so that your writing becomes more effective. I welcome writers that would like help with APA, MLA, and Chicago style formats.

Lana

If you are an adult student returning to school after a hiatus in classroom routine, I’d like to help you feel confident with your writing. Writing is more than spelling, grammar and style. It involves negotiating technology and the ability to ferret out valid information. I like working with students who need to learn how to do library research, are required to use the APA style guide, speak English as a second language, and who have not been in school for a long time. My background is in medical and social science, anthropology, film, women’s studies and vocabulary building.

Mikaela

My background is in English and Psychology. I have experience with the MLA and the APA format, as well as the creative writing process. As a participant in several writing workshops, I have always enjoyed collaborating with my peers – and now, I’m here to collaborate with you, on anything from brainstorming to perfecting the final draft.

Writing is an excellent - but sometimes frustrating – way to express your knowledge and ideas. I enjoy helping others gain confidence in expressing themselves through the written word. Currently in the MA Literature program, I also have experience in all of the humanities – especially Art History. In addition, I can help you with your resume or personal profile. Really, I would be happy to work with you on any form of written assignment you would like assistance with. Over the past four years I have been working on a periodical covering every topic from movie reviews, recipes, and current events, to art expositions, literary analysis, and fictional exposés. So make an appointment today, and let's start writing!

Phil

I am currently a Creative Writing graduate student and I have had writing intensive coursework in written communications and rhetoric, English lit, philosophy and religious studies. I can best help with brainstorming and planning the organization of a paper, including the all important introduction paragraph and thesis sentences. I am also able to help develop and strengthen arguments and counterarguments necessary in most academic writing, as well as assist with creative writing of all types.

Sara

More than not, the most difficult part of the writing process is the STARTING point. Because of this, I feel that some of the most productive consultations are those in which I brainstorm with the writer. Usually the writer just needs to HEAR their ideas out loud to gain all of the confidence they need to begin. My specialties include the MLA and APA citation styles. I've had experience writing papers for Psychology, Theatre, Communications, and English. I'm also a huge theatre geek, so bring it on theatre kids!

Sloane

Have you ever sat down with a writing assignment and had one of those, “Uh-oh,” moments? If so, then I can help soothe your academic anxiety and get those creative thoughts flowing. I have a degree in English and am currently working on my MFA in Creative Writing. I would love to assist you with understanding difficult readings, brainstorming, MLA/APA/Chicago style, structure, and sentence level issues. Because of my background, I can also guide you through any creative writing assignments you may have. I love working one-on-one and helping people produce their best work!
