Storytelling As a Pedagogical Technique

For thousands of years, humankind has taught and learned through interactive oral narrative, better known as storytelling. Storytelling promotes memory and enhances learning based on characteristics including an emphasis on sequencing and an appeal to affect. Equally important is its ability to exercise the imagination, and a strong imagination allows students to imagine alternative solutions to both academic and non-academic problems.

This lively presentation will explore (1) how storytelling works, (2) how it is used to teach in areas as diverse as business, English, nursing, peace studies and the sciences, and (3) how it can help faculty reach even the most disengaged students.

BIO:
Caren S. Neile, MFA, Ph.D., directs the South Florida Storytelling Project in the School of Communication & Multimedia Studies and School of the Arts.

She performs and teaches storytelling throughout the country and abroad, most recently as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Jerusalem. Dr. Neile is a founding editor of the international peer-reviewed journal Storytelling, Self, Society (Taylor & Francis) and an incoming board member of the National Storytelling Network, the professional organization of storytellers. Among her numerous publications, an anthology of stories by acclaimed performer Roslyn Bresnick-Perry is due out in December.
